Swedish Meatballs with Gravy
Tender spiced meatballs in a silky gravy over noodles.
The secret of Swedish meatballs is a whisper of allspice and nutmeg, and a gravy enriched at the end. Greek yogurt stirred in off the heat stands in for the cream and keeps it tangy and light. Serve over egg noodles with a spoon of tart berry jam.
Ingredients
For 4 bowls.
Meatballs
- 1 1/2 lb 93% lean ground beef
- 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 yellow onion, grated
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Gravy
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 cup plain 2% Greek yogurt
To serve
- 6 oz egg noodles
- 2 tablespoons lingonberry or cranberry jam
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Method
Mix the beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, spices and salt with your hands until just combined, then roll into 24 meatballs.
Brown the meatballs in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, turning, for 8 to 10 minutes until 160°F. Move to a plate.

Tips
- Roll the meatballs with wet hands so they stay round and don't stick.
- Lingonberry jam is traditional; cranberry or raspberry works too.
